Enkai and Karaoke

The above items in my ‘title’ loosely translated, mean:

enkai: a drinking party designated for any kind of event, where there is lots of beer, Japanese tea, and never any water. Usually, there is only food I can’t eat… or don’t WANT to eat. (Ususally the former… physically unable to swallow uncooked nastiness.) It begins with a kampaii speech (‘Cheers’) and ends in everyone standing around the table yelling ‘BONZAI!’ three times. (Congratualtions… I think)

karaoke: A chance to embarrass myself in front of important people. (ie. MY BOSSES at the Board of Education), by singing random selections such as: Spice Girls, Wannabe; Madonna, Like a Prayer; Kelly Clarkson, Breakaway…. and YES, in that order.

It was a pretty great night. I figured that since it was a school night, we would end early… like 9 pm. Yeah, 11:20 rolls around and I am finally walking through my front door. πŸ™‚ Tired…. but good. πŸ™‚ It was a fun time. Probably one of the best enkais I have ever been too. πŸ™‚

The rest of the world will never understand.

  1. indeed, i do remember that night and think of it fondly.  just a minor attempt to show you what you are truly worth, ms. aris!  however, i cannot answer you final question.  i have no idea why we kinda just fell away from one another.  can we remedy that??? πŸ™‚

  2. “The rest of the world will never understand.” I fully agree.  I have been to a couple enkais before and i think i most enjoy the baonzai parts. yes, it’s a jolly good time. oh and karaoke. i have lost count of how many times i have had to completely embarrass myself like that. i attempted to sing a japanese song once. i butchered it.

  3. right now, i’m a barista at a downtown denver starbucks.  however, that’s really just to pay the bills.  i’m actually interning with a refugee-oriented non-profit organization and i love it.  really, i’m just the administrative wench, but i don’t care…i really enjoy working for such a great place.  anywho, i’ve applied to peacecorps and am also considering teaching abroad.  how has your time across the world been going for you, friend?!?!? πŸ™‚

Happy Birthday! I have a package for you, I knew you’d be here so I didn’t send it, but I told Jared I’d leave it in the office and forgot! So, if I don’t see you while you’re here, I’ll mail it so you’ll get it soon!
Time now to go shwoosh and slush down the mountain!
